Oh Canada! – An Insider’s Guide to Snow Filled Fun in Lake Louise
I must admit, most of my vacation days are spent basking in the sun in a warm location, sipping a glass of champagne on the beach or by the pool. But this year for my husband’s birthday we wanted to switch it up and planned a trip to Lake Louise in Canada. Good friends of ours live there and we thought this would be a great getaway. We were so right! Here is my insider’s guide of where to eat, stay, and how to play!
Where to Stay
The Post Hotel, Lake Louise Alberta
For our trip we decided to stay at the beautiful Post Hotel. This Relais & Chateaux property was voted one of the world’s most beautiful ski lodges. The service, cuisine and the extraordinary views made our stay extremely memorable. If you know me you know I love champagne and wine. This resort has a private wine cellar with over 25,000 bottles of some of the world’s most sought after varietals! When we toured the cellar it basically knocked me off my feet! (Or actually that may have been the bottle the sommelier chose for us to sip on just before lol!) Our stay was quaint and cozy. The resort boasts only 96 rooms, with loft suites and family accommodations that include the Watson House; a 3000 square foot chateau onsite. We stayed in the Post Lodge Suite complete with our very own wood burning fire place, heated floors, two bathrooms and our very own Nespresso machine. And right outside our living room window was the property’s onsite ice skating rink open all day and night. Tip: you can bring your own skates or rent them just down the road at the marketplace down the street. We decided to turn one of our days into a spa day and visited the Post Spa complete with an indoor salt water pool. Our couples massage was honestly one of the best I have ever had! I can’t wait to visit our friends at The Post Hotel again soon. Definitely my pick for a stay in Lake Louise.
Where to Play
Kingmik Dog Sled Tours
When we got to Lake Louise my husband Steve said he had a special surprise for me that he had set up through our friends Mike and Carol. I was dying to see what it was. We drove about 5 minutes from the lodge and arrived onsite at Kingmik Dog Sled tours. This is something I have always had only bucket list and I was so happy to cross it off. We met our guide Lisa who was one of the swwetes and kindest people, so in love with her dogs and the dogsledding experience. We were introduced to our pack lead by Flower and 7 other Alaskan Huskies. Of course I loved that the female was leading the pack, she was such a #BossBabe. The two-hour tour consists of a sleigh ride through Lake Louise and Banff National Park. These dogs are absolutely remarkable. Their stamina and willingness to explore was remarkable. Each dog can effortlessly pull two times their weight and if you stop for a photo op they howl and bark excited to continue on their run. The team at Kingmik cares for these dogs like I have never seen before. They are all so loved and extremely well taken care of. The respect they have for their trail leaders and vice versa shines through. The tour ends through the forest of Narnia and is absolutely magical. At the end of the sledding experience you personally provide each dog with a frozen chicken treat and thank them for the best ride of your life. I highly recommend this tour with Kingmik when in Lake Louise.
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Love the Fairmont Chateau for some afternoon fun. This resort is located directly on Lake Louise itself and has an outdoor Ice Castle that you can ice skate around. They also have an outdoor Stoli Ice Bar which is great for an afternoon cocktail. It’s equipped with outdoor heaters to keep you warm just in case the vodka isn’t doing the trick. While you’re there I would also recommend taking the horse drawn carriage ride along the frozen lake!
Where to Eat
Chuck’s Steakhouse, Banff
We were super obsessed with the Dining Room at The Post Hotel (we basically ate almost every meal there lol) but wanted to make our way to Banff one day to tour the city. We had dinner at Chuck’s Steak House with our friends and it was delicious! This region of Canada is world renowned for their beef. My favorite menu items were the Chateaubriand for two, the escargot and beef carpaccio. I’m literally making my mouth water as I write this! So delicious you will definitely have to give it a try!
And that’s a wrap!
